San Miguel de Allende, México

Founded in 1542, San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful and historic town in Mexico's central highlands. Originally established as an outpost along the silver route from Zacatecas to Mexico City, San Miguel is home to some of Mexico's finest colonial architecture, a thriving cultural environment and artistic community, and world-class food and hotels in a charming, small-town setting.

Thousands of visitors from Mexico and beyond come to visit San Miguel de Allende each year, drawn to its beautiful colonial architecture, spectacularly sunny climate, great shopping, spa and relaxation activities, and nearby thermal hotsprings. Just an hour from the international airport in Leon/Guanajuato, San Miguel is easy to access and also a great jumping off point to other colonial attractions, including the spectacular silver city of Guanajuato. 165 miles northwest of Mexico City, San Miguel is centrally located for daytrips throughout the country.

The first art school in Latin America was founded in San Miguel de Allende, and since its founding, San Miguel has been a desination for art students and artists in general. David Alfaro Siqueiros, the great Mexican muralist, is one of the masters who made history in San Miguel de Allende. At the famous art school Bellas Artes, visitors can see on of Siqueiros’s projects. San Miguel de Allende has long been home to a sizable expatriate community from the United States. Originally, San Miguel was a destination for United States GIs who chose to use their educational grants studying art in San Miguel. During the 1960's, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Ken Kesey are some of the other personalities that have passed through San Miguel. One of their favorite Bohemian hangouts, bar La Cucaracha, is still in service.
