TAKE A TOUR OF THE FABRICA LA AURORA -->

On the morning of March 11th, 1991, when the whistle announcing the start of a new work day sounded for the last time, nobody would have been able to imagine what the 21st century had in store for this textile factory

The construction of the original textile factory was concluded in the year 1902. It was strategically located below “Las Colonias” dam which supplied the water necessary to generate electricity. For almost 90 years the factory remained a manufacturer of premium cotton “manta” and textiles. During this time, Fabrica La Aurora was the main source of jobs in San Miguel de Allende, to the degree that practically every sanmiguelense has a family member that worked at the factory.

Today, Fabrica La Aurora, continues to preserve the same façade, twelve cantera arches surround the main entrance, a red brick arch, that opens its iron gates to visitors who are surprised to find in the interior the new destiny of this old building: The Aurora Art and Design Center.

In 2001, the Garay family, owners of the Aurora since 1932, decided to go into a new production line. However, they are not using cotton as their raw material or water as its main power source. This time they are allowing imagination to fuel the rebirth of this old historical building as a project at the vanguard.

Among old textile machines and hydrolic turbines, the large warehouses that housed spinning machines, cotton and maintenance equipment have been transformed into galleries with contemporary art, furniture and interior design stores, antiques and jewelry, linens and accessories, restaurants, and maybe the most attractive aspect, the studio galleries.

Here, recognized artists, both national and international have found a place to develop their creativity while at the same time exhibiting their works. The large walls and natural light that permeates the building and the large open spaces create the perfect environment for the exhibition and creation of art. Every corner is different and maybe the only similarity is the general obsession with beauty.

Almost 15 years have passed since the whistle announcing the beginning of the work day fell silent, but you can still find traces of cotton in the rafters and oil from the machinery on the floors. The stone walls no longer hold the echo of the banging spinners, now they accompany visitors along the long hallways that empty out into the imagination of any number of artists.

La Fabrica La Aurora is one of San Miguel's most unique must-see stops. An art and design center housed in a beautiful retired textile factory from the turn-of-the century.
